Fraym for

OFF-GRID POWER DEVELOPERS

bullet-03

An off-grid energy developer was planning an expansion in Tanzania. Fraym was asked to:

fraym_1

Identify the areas with the most latent demand for off-grid energy

fraym_2

Pinpoint locations for new sites within these priority areas

Construct Decision Filters

Fraym used a series of proprietary data 'filters' to identify and compare locations with latent demand for off-grid power in 5x5 km grids across the country.

Picture1
GRID PROXIMITY

We exclude 5x5 km areas close to the existing or planned electricity grid.

Picture2
POPULATION DENSITY

We also exclude areas with insufficient population density.

Picture3
AGGREGATE SPENDING

We add monthly household spending to show ability-to-pay.

Picture4
OTHER ATTRIBUTES

We add relevant context like cell tower, school, clinic, and water locations.

Identify High-Potential Locations

Fraym plotted population density and monthly spending to reveal the “high scorers” across all dimensions, which identified and ranked the most promising off-grid development areas for further exploration.

We then assessed concentrations of high-scoring locations to select a subset of high-potential areas for in-depth site scoping using satellite imagery.

Zoom Into Promising Areas

Exploring the 5x5 km area surrounding one high-potential site revealed that:

bullet-03

Aggregate household spending is ~1.6 billion shillings per month; relatively high compared to other rural sites.

bullet-03

Population is nearly 15,000, also on the high end of the rural distribution.

bullet-03

Nearest school is ~1.1 km from the site.

bullet-03

Nearest health clinic is ~0.4 km from the site.

bullet-03

Site is ~510 km by road from client headquarters in Dar es Salaam.

CONCLUSION

Fraym pinpointed the best sites, which are now ready for in-person assessments --completing the process at a fraction of the time and cost of traditional consulting services.
